First symptoms of pregnancy

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU'RE PREGNANT?

Pregnant? Not pregnant? There are signs and tests to make sure.

The first signs of pregnancy

The absence of rules at the scheduled or amenorrhoea date is one of the first signs. But this is not a sign of pregnancy enough because some women have irregular cycles. Stress, sports or travel can also delay the rules.

Nausea, stomach ache, abdominal bloating, chest swelling are small signs that you may be pregnant.

Pregnancy test

As a first step, you can do a pregnancy test available in a pharmacy or in a large-area store.

The principle is to detect in your morning urine the presence of pregnancy hormone (chorionic gonadotropic hormone or HCG). This hormone appears 10 days after fertilization and the reliability of these tests is 95 %.

If the test is positive or if you are in doubt, even after a negative test, consult your doctor.

The first ultrasound

A first ultrasound, carried out during the first trimester of pregnancy, confirms pregnancy, determines the number of embryos present and verifies whether the embryo (s) is(are) well implanted in the mucosa of the uterine cavity.

It also allows you to date your pregnancy in order to establish the expected date of delivery.

The age of a pregnancy is expressed in two different ways :
  • or in weeks of amenorrhea: this is the number of weeks since the first day of your last period ;
  • either in weeks or months of pregnancy: this is the number of weeks or months estimated since fertilization (14 days after the first day of the last period in case of regular cycles).
